Ideas & Resources for October | 3rd Grade to 6th Grade

This blog is aimed at giving you some inspiration and ideas for teaching from third grade to sixth grade in the month of October.

Although not until the 31st October, Halloween is celebrated this month. Teach your students about the history of the famous holiday and about some of the traditions all around the world with our close reading activity. These come for fifth and sixth grade, as well as for third and sixth grade.

     

October also sees the celebration of Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This celebration takes place on the 12th October. Learn all about the famous explorer with our close reading activities, biography writing activities and our new Christopher Columbus Escape Room Activity.

    

The world was hit by a huge financial crisis in 1929 in the month of October, with the stock market crash and the start of the Great Depression. Teach your students all about the period with our close reading activities, informational writing units and escape room activities.

    

Famous birthdays from the month of October include the famous Brazilian soccer superstar, Pele – who was born in 1922; the Indian independence leader, Mahatma Gandhi, who was born in 1869; the incredible Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, who was born in 1881; and the Microsoft founder and once world’s richest man – Bill Gates, who was born in 1955.

    

Other famous dates from history include the Battle of Hastings in 1066, where William the Conqueror proved victorious; the founding of the Walt Disney company in 1923; the end of the Battle of Britain during World War 2; and the famous boxing match, the Rumble in the Jungle between Muhammed Ali and George Foreman.
