An Ancient Greece unit of work for fifth or sixth graders which provides a comprehensive and engaging exploration of ancient historical events and famous figures. The unit plan takes students through some of the main events and key figures from the civilization.
Overview:
- Overview of Ancient Greece (2 Lessons, 1-2) – An overview of the civilization looking briefly at its location, peak power, advancements, and legacy. Students will research key events from the civilization and create a timeline.
- Ancient Greece Map Activities (1 Lesson, 3) – Students will plot out the area of Ancient Greece in the modern world; then research Greece at its peak.
- Key Figures of Ancient Greece (4 Lessons, 4-7) – Students work in small groups to research three key figures from the civilization. Then, move on to independently write a discussion text comparing these influential leaders.
- Greek Mythology Storytelling & Comic Strip Creation (2 Lessons, 8-9) – Students learn about Homer and his famous stories – The Iliad and the Odyssey. Then they create a comic strip about these stories.
- Biography Report & Escape Room (4 Lessons, 10-13) – Students decide between Alexander the Great and Socrates and write a biography report before completing an escape room activity in digital or print format.
- Greek Architecture Challenge (1 Lesson, 14) – Students learn about Greek Architecture and columns, then create their own mini-Parthenon or temple.
- Assessment (3 Lessons, 15-17) – Students complete a writing task to show their understanding of the ancient civilization.
