Ancient Mesopotamia Unit Plans and Resource Bundle | 5th Grade & 6th Grade

An Ancient Mesopotamia unit of work and bundle of resources for fifth or sixth graders which provides a comprehensive and engaging exploration of ancient historical events and famous figures. The unit and resources take students through some of the main events and key figures from the civilization.

Overview of the Unit:

• Overview of Ancient Mesopotamia (2 Lessons, 1-2) – An overview of the civilization looking briefly at its location, advancements, and legacy. Students will research key events from the civilization and create a timeline.
• Ancient Mesopotamia Map Activities (1 Lesson, 3) – Students will plot out the area of Mesopotamia in the modern world; then research it at its peak.
• Key Figures of Ancient Mesopotamia (4 Lessons, 4-7) – Students work in small groups to research three key figures from the civilization. Then, move on to write a discussion text comparing these influential individuals.
• Ziggurats Model Making (2 Lessons, 8-9) – Students learn about Ziggurats and then create their own model.
• Hammurabi’s Code, Epic of Gilgamesh & Escape Room (4 Lessons, 10-13) – Students will learn about Hammurabi and his laws or the story of the famous king, Gilgamesh, and independently write an informational report before completing an escape room activity in digital or print format.
• Cuneiform Writing (1 Lesson, 14) – Students learn about Cuneiform and create stone tablets with their names.
• Assessment (3 Lessons, 15-17) – Students complete a writing task to show their understanding of the ancient civilization.
