An Ancient Rome unit of work for fifth or sixth graders which provides a comprehensive and engaging exploration of ancient historical events and famous figures. The unit plan takes students through some of the main events and key figures from the civilization.
Overview:
- Overview of Ancient Rome (2 Lessons, 1-2) – An overview of the civilization looking briefly at its location, peak power, advancements, and legacy. Students will research key events from the civilization and create a timeline.
- Ancient Rome Map Activities (1 Lesson, 3) – Students will plot out the area of Ancient Rome in the modern world; then research Rome at its peak.
- Key Figures of Ancient Rome (4 Lessons, 4-7) – Students work in small groups to research three key figures from the civilization. Then, move on to independently write a discussion text comparing these influential leaders.
- The Story of Romulus and Remus (1 Lesson, 8) – Students learn about the the founding story of Rome, sort storytelling timeline cards and then create either a comic or skit about the story.
- Biography Report & Escape Room (3 Lessons, 9-12) – Students decide between Julius Caesar and Augustus and independently write a biography report before completing an escape room activity in digital or print format.
- Latin & Roman Numerals Activities (1 Lesson, 13) – Students learn about Roman Numerals and complete an activity using their new knowledge.
- Assessment (3 Lessons, 14-16) – Students complete a writing task to show their understanding of the ancient civilization.
